A few months ago I was contacted by Tom Wild, a designer practicing in the U.K. Tom was involved in a personal project of creating a book showcasing illustrators and designers from around the globe and circulating it amongst the art directors of U.K.'s ad agencies and design shops. The theme of the book was dreams and the unconsciousness. Two of my pieces were included in this collection. It's great to meet such individuals that while furthering their own career contribute to the discipline and the art community as a whole. You can view the book online right here.

The AD, Lee and the entire Feathertale team as well as all the contributors did a great job in making this a great issue. A couple of months ago I posted some work I have been doing as part of my studio course this semester. The main project involved creating a 3D structure relating to a neighborhood in Toronto as well as to a story from the book "Invisible Cities" by Italiano Calvino. I am relieved and excited to say that the work for this project and the course is drawing to an end. Here are the final graphics that went on the structure as well as some shots of the actual model.

Feathertale Review

Here are the front and back covers for the 4th edition Feathertale Review magazine scheduled to come out later this month. The theme for this issue was surviving in a time of uncertainty. Both these images reference two stories that appear inside the magazine. One is about a humorist writer, Spalding Gray who ironically commits suicide by jumping off the Staten Island ferry. The other is about a Georgian cosmonaut who is sent on mission into outer space with no means of returining back to earth. Both stories although dealing with the concept of death do try and put a positive spin on the whole motif and give the reader a sense of hope. The art director, Lee wanted me to do the same with my images, call it dark humor if you will. If you're unable to attend the Feathertale launch party at the end of the month the magazine will be sold at Chapters till the end January, make sure to check it out, this publication features some great work from a variety of very talented illustrators and writers.

3X3 Merit Award

I just got word that my Woody Allen submission won a merit award in the 3X3 pro show and will be included in the 6th edition award annual. It's really exciting being in this book with some of the illustration legends I've been admiring for years. Look out for the annual it's due to come out later this year.

As part of my studio curse this semester the main project is to create a 3D structure, sculpture if you will, with graphic elements on its surface. The project entails selecting a neighborhood in Toronto as well as a story from a book by Italiano Calvino, "Invisible Cities" (I found this book is a great source of inspiration, make sure to check it out if you have a chance) The 3D piece has to be in spirit of the selected neighborhood as well as carry some of the themes explored in the chosen story. Here some process image making, I'll be using some of this and other material as a facade of the final structure. More to come soon.

After watching a few Woody Allen films I got inspired to do this piece. Woody seems to be constantly surrounded by gorgeous women both on screen and off. Part of the humor of his films comes from seeing this droopy Jewish guy intimidated by the presence of various hot girls, that's what made me chuckle.

I Haven't had much time to post for a while now. It's been kinda hectic returning to York after a 3 month strike. Anyway I wanted to post one of the projects I worked on as part of my studio course. This is book consisting of famous quotes and images illustrating those quotes. The book is a 26 page accordion fold which sits in a hand made wooden box. I know I became a carpenter… I'll post more images of the actual layouts. It was fun project I got to work with a letterpress, which works great when combining it with traditional illustration. "Feathertale will be on display at Toronto's annual Word on the Street festival Sunday, September 28. Look for the blue monkey in the Magazine's Muse Alley of Queen's Park. Notable Feathertale contributors Kevin Scanlon, Rick Taylor, Iain Marlow will join host Brett Popplewell for a stand-up hour of comic readings during the day's festivities at the Magazines Canada tent."

As well, my piece "Road to discovery" above will be on sale as a limited edition print. If you're in the area check out the event and pick up a print. It's great for the kids and even better for the misses.

Here's some recent pieces I did for an article in the Feathertale Review Magazine. The article is about a restaurant that neglected to notice that their soup of the day had maggots in the mix and served it to their unsuspecting customers. That'll make you appreciate home cooking. This was a really fun project. Lee Wilson, the art director, is a very cool guy to work with. Look out for this issue of the review in the next few weeks.

I barely got my feet wet at The Post when Jonathan Kay sent another assignment my way. This one with literally a 3 hour turnaround. I was given the article at 1:15, went through a couple sets of roughs and delivered the final by 4 pm. It was a bit hectic but it definitely taught me how to be quick on my feet in terms of concept. Interesting assignment and Jonathan is a great guy to work with. This article is another excerpt from a book by Pauline Chen. It's about a doctor who saw that having human compassion, rather than a cold professional manner, towards a terminal patient's family can have a great positive effect on helping them cope with a soon and imminent death of a loved one. This piece is published in today's (Saturday) Post page A23, check it out!

Some very exciting news! After visiting the National Post this job came my way from Jonathan Kay, the comments page editor. The article talks about the moral dilemma surgeons face when treating terminal patients especially children. The surgeons find it important to seek comfort in the rituals and practices of their trade. The idea I used for it is a doctor who’s protecting herself with a shield in a form of a surgical lamp, while holding an ill child.
I really enjoyed working on this assignment in definitely opened my eyes into how tight deadlines are when it comes to newspapers. Special thanks to Kagan Mcleod and Donna Braggins for helping me with this, lets hope this is a glimpse of things to come! For those of you who are readers of The Post you can check out my piece in the Issues section page A11 of today's (Friday) paper.

On Thursday May 24, I found myself downtown Toronto visiting Reactor Art & Design. At about 4:30 pm when I left their office, I along side tens of thousands of downtown employees, discovered that the subway service wasn’t operating. This being rush hour the taxis and busses quickly filled up. As the masses of people me included began walking north to see if any other stations were working, one could see the fibers of social structure begin to fall apart. People were literally going nuts. I personally witnessed some people desperately trying to pry the doors open on taxis already filled with pasengers. People were shoving and pushing as they made their way through the crowd slowly moving down Yonge Street. No one seemed to know what was going on. Some were saying that specific stations were operating, others were saying none were working. What resulted is a crowd, resembling the armies of Mordor wandering, yelling and franticly zigzaging in all directions all throughout downtown. All in all my usual 40 min trip took about 3 hours but I arrived home safe and sound without any bite or scratch marks, all though there were few close calls.

The new president of France, Nicolas Sarkozy defeated the Socialists' Segolene Royal on the May 6th election. Sarkozy is calling for tougher imigration laws and vowed to defend the identety and indipendance of France, while some critics aren't sure if he's up for the task.

Some feel living or having a bond with Israel is not necessary for their Jewish Identity, wich the young generation seem to be establishing on their own regardless of where they live.

The world leaders all enter a miss universe pagent and when asked what they would do if they were to become the nations leader they would all agree on world peace.
